Sewing is a life skill that everyone should know and it's best to start kids out when they’re younger. Not only will they be able to sew back a button that they lost on the playground, but it will also teach them other lessons that are useful in all aspects of life. The ability to use a foot pedal at the right speed while also guiding the fabric teaches children how to focus and maintain self-control. This transfers directly to the classroom and can help students focus better in class and ultimately retain more information. So how can you as a parent teach your kid this essential life skill? Simply follow these steps to get you started.
Step One: Find a Fun Activity
Pick a sewing activity that is fun for your little one. Maybe your son wants to make a new Avengers pillow for his bed, or your daughter wants to sew her own princess dress. Whatever it is, be sure to make it exciting. Once you decide on the project, head to the fabric store and let your kid pick out what he or she wants. Here is where you can incorporate a math lesson as well, and have them figure out how much of the fabric they will need. When you first start out, you may want to do the same project multiple times with different patterns or embellishments to help them learn.
Step Two: Introduce the Sewing Machine
The sewing machine can be a little intimidating to a kid so make sure they are comfortable with it before having them start. Begin by telling them the history of the sewing machine and how it had a huge impact on the clothing industry. You can make it into a tale that will inspire them to want to use the machine. Also, be sure to give them the safety talk so they know where exactly they should put their hands and precisely how the machine works. You may want to show them how it’s done so that they can visually learn as well.
Step Three: Start to Sew
After all the precautions are taken, you can start to show them the ropes. Start by letting them control the pedal while you guide the fabric through the needle. This will help them get a feel for the pedal without fearing the needle. Be sure to tell them that slow and steady wins the race, and when they start to get the hang of it, let them guide the fabric. You can draw lines on the fabric to help guide them as well.
