How To Decorate For Fall On A Budget

There are few things that are more fun than rolling up your sleeves and decorating your home for the upcoming season or holiday.  Some people love to go all out with their decorations, transforming their homes into the physical embodiment of the season. Autumn is a particularly fun season to decorate for - the abundance of fiery-hued leaves, ready-to-harvest fruits, and, of course, Halloween, make it a prime time to get crafty and give your home a festive touch. But how do you deck out your house with Fall-fare without breaking the bank? We've made it easy for you.  P.S - This book (Tis The Autumn Season: Fall Quilts and Decorating Projects) is filled to the brim with gorgeous project and decor ideas for Fall. It's a must-have for every avid quilter, and anyone who loves fall and home decor.

  1. Go outside!

During the fall, the great outdoors transforms into one giant craft store. Brightly coloured leaves, glossy chestnuts, twigs, and stones can all be used to create striking decor pieces for next to nothing. An easy way to add a festive touch to your home? Gather up a pile of the prettiest leaves you can find, press 'em flat, and frame them. Easy peasy.

2. See treasure where others would see trash!

Most people throw out all of their empty containers, boxes, and cans without thinking twice. But you're not most people. All you need is a little creativity and suddenly that soup can looks an awful lot like a flower vase, and that empty box that used to contain your tomatoes looks like the perfect centerpiece to hold your gold, spray-painted pumpkins. Sometimes the most beautiful decor pieces are created out of items that would normally be seen as trash! Think before you toss, because you never know what you can make with seemingly useless items.

3. Be crafty!

This one likely goes without saying, but making decorations is almost always waaaay cheaper than buying them. It's also a lot more fun! Transform unexpected items into eye-catching statement pieces with a little paint, glue, and creativity. We can think of no better way to spend a rainy Sunday afternoon.

4. Scour secondhand shops!

Thrift stores are absolute treasure troves when it comes to interior decorating. The key is to go in with an open mind and a sharp eye. Love the shirt's fabric but hate it's shape? Cut it up and make some throw pillows. Does that figurine you love not fit your minimalist decor aesthetic? Coat it in matte white paint. Of course, you won't necessarily score every time you walk into a secondhand shop, but that is part of the fun and it is the best way to find one-of-a-kind, unusual items (like vintage fabrics and buttons) that you wouldn't find anywhere else.

5. Get graphic!

The steps are simple. Hop on a computer. Find a Fall-themed quote that tickles your fancy. Print it. Frame it. Hang it. You're done! Make your new piece of instant-art even more striking with rustic wooden frames. P.S. You can easily recreate similar pieces of word-art for each season and holiday.

6. Use what you've got!

First things first, before you head out and buy a bunch of decorations, take stock of what you already have laying around the house. It is likely that your space is already filled with potential decor gems! For example, layering different coloured items in a glass jar or vase can make quite a statement all on it's own. Gather up some buttons, candies, or lentils in Fall hues, and layer for a blocked or ombre effect. Bonus: It's a great way to reduce clutter.
